If there is any part of your computer that deserves your attention more than anything else, then it goes without saying that the part is the hard drive. It is the most important part of the computer and just like heart and soul is to man, so is the hard drive to your computer. Without it, your computing device is but a mere metal scrap with no technological value whatsoever. It is easy to loose USB flash drivers or externak hard disk drivers. When you encrypt a drive the content can be read only after the correct password has been entered. You should therefore protect it just like you protect your heart lest you lose everything you had worked for in just seconds.
1. Encrypting A USB Stick :
Whether you’re using an external hard drive for backup purposes or to provide additional storage for your Mac, it’s important to make sure that whatever information it contains is as secure as possible. By setting up passwords and data encryptions, you can be sure that no one else will get access to your hard drive but you. Encrypting your data will scramble it for everyone else but you. Unfortunately, encryption is only available in Windows XP but then again this is only for NTFS file systems. The process of file or folder encryption is a piece of cake as you only need to right click on the folder or file you want to encrypt the go to properties then Advanced tab and check the small box labeled Encrypt contents to secure. Encryption is simply the most secure way to protect the files on your hard drive. It’s also more convenient than messing with hard disk passwords.
2.Using Secured Disks:
Secure Disk is the perfect solution for protecting sensitive information from theft and other attacks. It makes a part or all of your hard disk, USB flash drive, or removable drive, into a secure vault, which can be accessed like any drive except it requires login User ID and passwords to open. All your private information stored on the Secure Disk is protected by Strong Encryption with options of 256-bit or 448-bit encryption. You can create as many vaults of any size as you like to compartmentalize data with the ability to move files from one vault to another.
Ignore Windows suggestion to format the disk. Start DiskCryptor click the disk and then "Mount". Now use the drive as usual. Before pulling it out don't forget to click on "Unmount".
3. Reproducing TrueCrypt Container:
One useful encryption utility is Truecrypt from the TrueCrypt Foundation. With this free, open-source program, you can create virtual encrypted disks or encrypt entire drives, including the Windows drive. Open the Windows Disk Management (Press[win] + [R] and enter "diskmgmt.msc",[Enter]) and click "Action | Create VHD ( Virtual Hard Disk). Select the storage destination and size. In the disk management, right click the new disk and intialise it (MBR). Create a new volume thet you will code with DiskCryptor just like a USB stick.
